Colwood, originally known as Meadowbrook Golf Course, opened for play in 1929. Financial difficulties lead to bankruptcy in 1932 and the course was renamed to Colwood National.

In 1955, Dr. Cecil Saunders of Los Angeles and his son William purchased controlling interest in the course. In the early 60's, Alex Waterhouse became partners with the Saunders and founded National Golf Courses, Inc. This same corporation manages Meriwether National Golf Course and several others courses in California.

Colwood National Golf Course lies between Columbia Blvd. and the Portland International Airport. The Columbia River slough runs across several of the relatively flat and narrow tree lined fairways. The greens are well maintained with bunkers an land contours to make the course challenging.
