Eastern Oregon contrasts with its western counterpart. More seasonal, it's also drier than western Oregon with much more variation. It's not uncommon to play golf with snow-capped peaks in the background.

While the golf courses are scattered, they are certainly peaceful and affordable. One of the best is Wildhorse Golf Course, which is modeled after traditional Scottish links with plenty of bunkers and tall grass. The course, which can be tipped at more than 7,100 yards, features great views of the Blue Mountains, much of it reflected in the course's many water hazards. It's located in the northeastern part of the state near Pendleton.

While many of the golf courses in the eastern part of the state are little nine-hole finds, there are a few more 18-hole layouts as well, and some of them have a history. Quail Ridge Golf Course in Baker City is a muni that opened in 1936. Ontario Golf Club opened in 1964 and was designed by Bob Baldock. Buffalo Peak in Union, however, began in 2000 and plays nearly 6,500 yards with four sets of tees.
