Although records indicate that the golf course at Gearhart was established in 1892, tradition has it that several Scotsman laid out four holes on the wind-swept dunes in the 1880's. Gearhart is the oldest course in Oregon.

Originally a 9-hole course, it ws extended to 18 in 1913. Today the course is 6,218 yards, par-72 and stretches for about a mile from north to south, with the width equal to about three fairways. The elevation is fairly constant, but the up and down roll of the sand dunes over which the course is built, makes a flat lie a rarity. It's sand base makes for excellent drainage, and the encircling condo-motel units provide considerable shelter from the coastal winds. The course is generally wide open, easy to walk, and a pleasure to play.
